100 vs. 203 nit video workflows, support for HDR Reference White

  • Public draft now available

  • HDR for web as a focus - similar to how Apple does desktop HDR, with headroom based on device capabilities / brightness setting

  • When in reference mode, diffuse white at 100nit per spec

  • Same in OCIO for the SDR display color spaces

  • However, ITU is recommending SDR white at 203 nits. As most consumer displays are more at this level nowadays.

  • Carol - might be influenced by where ACES goes with this, maybe we should wait to see where that nets out

  • Mark - saw this with Blender a bit with their new color management stuff, wanting to export from the UI

  • Doug - it’s a little more general - should we support the ability to have a “settable” reference white - i.e. a scale factor to adapt SDR<-->HDR etc

  • What that does to middle grey is actually the question for scene-referred color management, not really reference white.

  • NBC is doing something similar to this for their SDR/HDR broadcast workflow

  • Mark - how would this show up in a config? As a variable in a config?

  • Carol - maybe eventually? but it’s a long discussion

  • Doug - really what we should decide is whether OCIO should implement st2094, which would then implement this scale factor as a parameter

  • Mark Reid - it’s also different in windows, which is a tough thing when OS’s operate differently

  • Doug - st2094 is targeting web, so this is what we would focus for and then let the OS stuff figure itself out

  • https://github.com/ccameron-chromium/ColorWeb-CG/blob/master/hdr-big-picture.md - good overview of HDR work in W3C.

FFMPEG/OCIO

  • Work happening to rewrite swscale, discussion has happened about where OCIO might fit in. Sounds like not in swscale, but possibly in its own filter in future. Sam Richards looking into it, Mark Reid super familiar with the code should support be needed

OCIOview

  • TSC OK’s moving to it’s own repo, Carol will work with LF to get that done

Python 3.14 wheels

  • will come with OCIO 2.5.1 December/early January
